MIQUEL SALOM AT ROGER SMITH HOTEL, NEW YORK CITY
salom-roger-smith-front-copy.jpg The Mayorcan photographer whose unique pieces were included in the 2006 exhibit, Stone Spirits, exhibits a one-week solo in The Penthouse Salon of the Roger Smith Hotel in Manhattan (501 Lexington Avenue).

Salom lives and works on the island of Mayorca, Spain. He had two highly successful solo shows last year in Mayorca, Memento (April 2006) and Organics (July-September 2006), and is currently being presented by the Island Council of Mayorca at the Contemporary Art Fair in Madrid (25-28 January 2007 ).

MARIA SCHON AND MOSES ROS AT TENGELSEN GALLERY, DIX HILLS, NY
Maria Schön and Moses Ros participate in an exhibition at the Tengelsen Gallery of the Art League of Long Island, Dix Hills, New York, titled Segun Nuestros Ojos / Through Our Eyes, curated by Carole Jay. It consists in a selection of ten acclaimed artists of Latin American background who explore contemporary perspectives.

Both artists have exhibited in group shows at Solar, Ros in 2004, and Schön more recently, in summer 2006.

schon-tanaguarena-copy.jpgMaria Schön was born in Ann Arbor, Michigan, to Venezuelan parents, and educated in Baltimore, Maryland, where she studied art, then later obtained a degree in Film at New York University. She lives and works in Sagaponack, New York. She has exhibited at Guild Hall, Arlene Bujese Gallery, Spanierman Gallery, and SOLAR.

tree-of-action-2003-_3.jpgMoses Ros was born in New York City, his family having relocated there from Dominican Republic, and trained as an architect at Pratt. He has had several public commissions, most recently a stained glass frieze called Patriasana (2005), commissioned by the MTA for the Fordham Road Station, and an interactive children’s sculpture, Mi Casita (2005), at the Williamsburg Day Care Center, Brooklyn. He lives and works in the Bronx, New York, and most recently was included in ¡Merengue! Visual Rhythms / Ritmos Visuales, an exhibition of artists from the Dominican Republic, at El Museo del Barrio, New York. On view in the gardens at SOLAR is his large-scale, welded steel sculpture, Luz Eterna.

Maria Schön was selected to exhibit in an upcoming exhibition at the Islip Art Museum titled Free Play. The exhibition explores the realms of fantasy, enchantment and dreams. Guest curator Judith Page, an artist, independent curator and critic, is especially interested in mythological worlds,
improbable imagery, hallucinations and apparitions. Schön exhibits two paintings: Carora and Chichiriviche, displayed as a diptych (above).

SOLAR ARTISTS RECOGNISED IN THE VII BIENAL DE PUERTO LA CRUZ, VENEZUELA

On view through February 18, 2008, this important national biennial being held for the seventh time in the coast city of Puerto La Cruz has awarded three artists represented by Solar with the following prizes: Astolfo Funes with the Eduardo Sifontes Grand Prize; Reinaldo Crespo with the Rafael Ramón González Acquisition Prize for Painting; and Lihie Talmor with the Sebastian Garrido Acquisition Prize for Photography.

These three artists’ works stood out among the total of 97 artworks selected for the Biennial. The Biennial was selected and juried by Élida Salazar, Pedro Briceño, José Napoleón Oropeza, Ramón Vásquez Brito, and Ramón Ordaz, all individuals well-known for their accomplishments in different cultural disciplines, from visual to literary arts. Nine artists in total were awarded with prizes.
