EDUARDO BARCENAS CELEBRATES TWO EXHIBITIONS:
Valencia, Venezuela and New York, USA
cult-1-4.jpg
Between January and February, 2009, Venezuelan artist, Eduardo Barcenas is exhibiting recent works in two distinct exhibitions: on 15 January, Solar opened Acts of Silence, with works from 2002-2008, at Elga Wimmer PCC, in Chelsea, New York, on view through 7 February (more information on this site, under On Exhibit). In Valencia, the show titled Entre la mascara y el silencio [Between the Mask and the Silence], opened 24 January at the Eladio Alemán Sucre Cultural Center in this Venezuelan city. Winner of the prestigious Alexis Perez Mujica award from the Michelena Biennial 2008 (see below), Barcenas is a mid-career artist whose work deals with contemporary anxieties: obscuring, silencing, censuring, themes he transmits most effectively by reducing his palette to a white monochrome, layered, and veiling traces of faces, figures, and written text. The piece that won him the Perez Mujica award is included in the Valencia show, along with 60 other works, including paintings, drawings, and wire sculpture. The artist is also working on a show to be presented at the Galería La Escuela of the Universidad del Atlántico, in Barranquilla, Colombia, later this year.
