SOLAR begins a regular exhibition schedule this spring and through the summer, with the first show scheduled to open on 14 May 2011. Jesus Matheus (born in Venezuela, lives in Boston, MA) will present New Work in paintings, sculptures, and works on paper through 20 June. Matheus’ first solo exhibit at SOLAR, The Skin of the Painting, was in 2002, and reviewed favourably by Eric Ernst in the Southampton Press. He has also been included in small group exhibitions, most recently New Construction x 4, in 2008. Matheus works in an abstract language concentrated on geometric form, often in very saturated colour or reduced to a palette of black and white or hues of brown. Matheus aligns himself with Mark Rothko’s dictum that “a painting is not about an experience, it is an experience.”
