Born in 1964 in New York to Colombian parents, Felipe Molina was raised in Medellín, Colombia, and Panama until the age of 4, when his family returned to the United States to live in Miami, Florida. Molina studied drawing with Alvaro Molina Namen in Miami in the early 70s. In 1991 he began studying drawing and printmaking at the Art Students League in New York, and also studied with Bob Blackburn and Marjorie van Dyke at the New York Printmaking Workshop. His work is often compared to that of Mexican artists Toledo and Tamayo, and Molina recognizes their influences. According to known art historian, Edward J. Sullivan, Molina “creates scenes of fantasy in which he often employs the images of animals or humans engaged in improbable activities. A personal mythology develops before our eyes as we observe print after print. While realizing and appreciating their manipulation of the language of fantasy, we understand that these prints also carry with them messages of a high degree of seriousness. They appear almost as metaphors for both chaos and the wished-for tranquility of modern as well as cosmic life”.
